The selected theory of “social learning” was chosen, developed by John krumboltz, Lynda Mitchell and G. Brian Jones. The construct of  Social learning consists of two parts; one focuses on explaining the origin of career choice listed as the (SLTCDM) – social learning theory of career decision making.  The second is based on career counseling and is labeled the learning theory of career counseling (LTCC). (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017, p. 64)  Social learning theory believes that peoples personalities can be explained because of their unique learning experiences and developmental processes.  The theorist felt that social learning and the individuals that problem solves make excellent headway by turning their environment to fit their purpose and needs. (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017, p. 64)

Two benefits of the decision making are genetic endowments such as intelligence, athletic ability, artistic talents and exposure to the environment. The condition within the situation is beyond the individual’s control.  To improve this training programs were implemented by the Comprehensive Employment Training Act.  On the other hand, the instrumental and associative learning experience includes antecedents, behaviors, and consequences.  Additionally, task approach skills are also used to choose a career since their work habits, mental set and emotional responses are needed. (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017, p. 64)  The overall ability to decipher what interests us, what has excellent values and determines what we are excellent at doing is icing on the cake.

The SLTCDM is beneficial towards future outcome of  goals.  Improvement may be needed on the expansion of what interest individuals, and not based on their characteristics. Maximizing the efforts of an individual career options, they should be encourage to learn new activities and capabilities. (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017, p. 64) A significant issue that should be improved, according to Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, (2017) “is client burnout, underemployment, low self – efficacy, conflicts with coworkers, and family members reactions to their career choice”(p. 64)   For example, at the age of 41, in order for me to be employed, I’m changing careers to gain employment.  The effects of the damage that deals with starting over, neglecting children, and family bonding time can be stressful.  Krumboltz, Foley, And Cotter, (2012), stated that “economic hardship stress can create financial hardship, but threatened or actual job loss can result in significant psychological distress as well as disruption to family relationships”(p.15). The goal to avoid the stress and negativity, reading affirmations to self, etc. career counseling is to clients help clients build more satisfying personal and work lives.

Career development and management can be challenging which is why there are established theories to help guide and understand one’s career choices (Normah, Azlin & Rosmawati, 2017). Anne Roe’s Personality Theory of Career Choice discusses the concept that one’s environment shapes their experiences early in life (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017). Roe theorized that any unsatisfied needs can become stronger motivators for anyone making choices regarding their career (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017). Roe In Roe’s concept, she explains that one chooses their occupation based on their need structures, which she believed were directly impacted by early childhood experiences (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017).  I can agree with this concept because as a child I always played that I was a teacher. My dad use to be a teacher so it was a career that I was exposed to from an early age. I would pretend to teach my sisters math and history. Now as an adult, I have always thought it would be exciting and fascinating to teach high education. It is something I would like to pursue after I complete this Masters program. According to Roe’s theory, teaching would fall under the service field classification, which focuses on people and where interpersonal skills are crucial (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017).It makes sense that I would pursue this considering my exposre from an early age.

Roe’s theory is not as popular as other theories because lacks intervention options and it has a retrospective nature (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017). It does discuss the impact that one’s parents have one their career development overall (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017). This theory is beneficial for some people because it helps them to think about their life overall and how their past can positively or negatively impact their future career development.
