a- The first step in the drawing is always simplification. The world is a complex place. A mistake many students make is trying to depict the world in all its complexity. It is possible to put all the details of your perception in a drawing or painting, but don’t start with the details. Simplify first, All subjects are made up of just a few basic shapes and forms. Shapes are everywhere and all objects have shape. When painting or drawing, you create a shape in two dimensions: length and width. You can add value to give it highlights and shadows, making it look more three-dimensional. Learn to identify these basic components, then begin your drawings with them. Breaking any process down into small chunks is a great way to tackle what can seem like a daunting task. If you’re struggling to figure out how to draw something complicated, try breaking the subject down into simple shapes. That can help you begin to describe its overall structure. All you need a solid grasp of how to draw a cube, cylinder, and sphere. There are three basic shape archetypes that any form can be fitted into. At the heart of these form shapes are two simple geometric shapes: the square and the ellipse. In graphic arts, these versatile shapes symbolize balance and stability. Apart from the rule of thirds, many artists like to use what’s called the golden triangle rule in their composition. It involves arranging elements in a triangle to create a harmonious and symmetrical image.

b- Basic forms and basic shapes are a key component to art. Shapes and forms are everywhere and in everything. They often go unnoticed because of how common they are. According to The Virtual Instructor “a shape is created when a line is enclosed. Shape is one of the seven elements of art and it has a variety of uses in the creation of art.” You can break down anything into basic shapes, circles, squares, triangles, etc. From there you can add depth and shading and create different forms. I personally had not ever looked for shapes too much when drawing, but after doing these weekly hand sketches I am beginning to see the different cylinders and forms that make up the hand. These forms are going to be the hand at it’s most basic level, from there you can begin to add more to make it more realistic. There are different types of shapes as well, there are geometric shapes which are your basic shapes and there are also free form shapes that tend to have a more organic look to them. Once you are able to recognize and see different forms and shapes in the world, you can begin to draw them better. Shapes are two dimensional and forms are three dimensional. By adding shading to a shape you are turning it into a form and by taking shading away you can turn a form into a shape. Just like shapes, forms can be geometric or organic. The geometric forms are the forms we are familiar with, such as sphere, cube, cylinder. The organic forms do not usually have names and more often than not are naturally occurring. By adding highlights and shadows to forms you can make them seem more three dimensional. I believe this is what we have been doing with the apple, mug, and toilet paper sketches. We sketch the basic shape of the apple and then we begin adding cross contour lines and other shading to create the form. It is really interesting to break things down into shapes and forms, it creates an entirely different perspective for drawing.Hands with ShapesLink
