An estimated 11.5 million illegal immigrants are now in the United States, according to the Pew Hispanic Center—the lowest number in a decade, and still declining. From 2000 to 2005, an average of 800,000 illegal immigrants entered the United States each year. But since then, an average of 500,000 has arrived annually.

Visit the CBP Border Security Spotlight and then briefly analyze the current security initiatives that are being used to protect our borders. What are some of the reasons why illegal immigration is currently declining in the U.S.? What approaches are some state and local units of government taking to attempt to further reduce the number of aliens who are living and working in their jurisdictions?

Illegal immigration has been a great problem in the United States of America for  a long time.  Ellis Island, the New York entryway for foreigners, opened in 1892 and turned into the country’s premier federal migration station. Fresh arrivals were obliged to demonstrate their identities, answer a progression of inquiries, find  a companion or relative who could vouch for them, and were examined for physical illnesses. When the operation had finished it n 1954, Ellis Island had handled more than 12 million legitimate foreigners (History of illegal immigration, 2012). After the stock market crashed in 1929, the U.S. tightened visa rules which markedly reduced Mexican immigration. Local, state and federal government officials debated what to do with those already here.

Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry (Border Patrol, n.d.).

. Border agents are needed to protect our borders from those wanting to traffic drugs, human traffickers, terrorists, and assault weapons in the United States. “More than 20,000 Border Patrol Agents protect our way of life 24/7, safeguarding nearly 6,000 miles of land border the United States shares with Canada and Mexico, and more than 2,000 miles of coastal waters” (Border Patrol, n.d., par.2).

President Obama’s Administration proposed a $600 million for hiring more border agents. But, unfortunately the house of representatives rejected hiring more agents. All Border Patrol operators spend at least 13 Weeks at the Border Patrol Academy (in the event that they are familiar with Spanish) in Artesia, New Mexico, which is a segment of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). The individuals who are not familiar with Spanish spend an extra eight weeks at the Academy for a sum of 21 weeks.

The major initiative taken by the border patrol is detection and apprehension. This includes detecting illegal immigrants and apprehending them. Detecting is through high-level surveillance from a concealed position, sightings using aircrafts, following marks and tracks as well as following up on available leads. Advanced technology is also being used in this fight since the border patrol has installed electronic systems that sense any movement in undesignated border areas (Peak, 2012).

Currently, illegal immigration in the U.S. is stabilizing. But, there are shifts in states were illegal immigrants live. California has the largest amount of illegal immigrants with 2.4 Millions could get help from expulsion, and work visas from an official activity that President Obama is relied upon to declare soon. The activity would be the most noteworthy insurance from expelling offered to unapproved workers since 1986, when Congress passed a law that permitted 2.7 million unapproved settlers to get a green card.

The enforcement is maintained through the development of strict immigration laws and high security maintenance (Peak, 2012). Again, the immigration customs have deported a high number of illegal immigrants in recent years. The decline is also attributed to a recession that dried up jobs in America leaving no room for unskilled labor.

Some states and local units of government are trying to reduce the number of illegal immigrants by massive deportation. The illegal immigrants are identified through random checks in traffic, major transportation points, city patrols and intelligence gathering (Peak, 2012). Again, some states have developed strict immigration laws to control the movement of people to their state.

The U.S. government is working harder than ever to control illegal migration especially due to the security threat posed by the vice.  Following the September 11, 2001 attack, the border patrol changed its focus to detection and apprehension. This has greatly reduced the number of illegal immigrants.

The Civil Society and human rights organizations alleged abuses to migrants by the Border Patrol Agents. There is also corruption. Some harbor illegal aliens into our country. There is the National Borer Control which represents our Border Agents. However. My opinion border patrol is needed. for the protection of our country. National Parks and forests have become some of the most dangerous and violent areas along the borders. There is also environmental damage, drinking water is becoming destroyed caused by  those entering our country illegaly.
