Migration Patterns Assignment

Take a look at this interactive map on migration (Links to an external site.). Based on data from the U.N. Population Division, this map shows the estimated net migration (inflows minus outflows) by origin and destination country between 2010 and 2015.

  • Blue circles = positive net migration (more inflows).
  • Red circles = negative net migration (more outflows).
  • Each yellow dot represents 1,000 people.

Choose a country of your interest; Hover over a circle to see that country’s total net migration between 2010 and 2015. Click a circle (or tap twice on mobile) to view only the migration flows in and out of that country. Answer the following questions, in 500 words, about the country of your choice:

  1. What role does this country play in global and local migration flows today?
  2. Does the interactive map reflect all of the current migration flows for the country of your choice?

In order to answer this question:

  1. While working with the map, you can see migration flows, both coming and going, by clicking on states. What patterns can you observe? Where are the people either coming from, or going to, with respect to this place?
  1. Identify two or three news articles from the past five years that explain the implications of these migration patterns on your country. What type(s) of migration is most relevant to your country? Why? What sorts of impacts does it appear to have?

Ground your answers in some concrete, cited, facts and figures, and recent reputable news articles that you might be able to use in your country essay. Make sure to use language we developed to talk about different kinds of migration (internal vs. external, forced vs. voluntary, push/pull factors, etc.).

Note: the map may not work (well) in Internet Explorer; if you find that, use Chrome, Firefox or Safari instead (probably a good general suggestion anyway).
