los angeles area museum observatory visit 3 page report

  1. If you live in the greater Los Angeles area and nearby counties, visit ONE of the following:
    • The Natural History Museum of LA County
    • The Griffith Observatory
    • Mount Wilson Observatory
    • The Page Museum (La Brea – Tar Pits)
    • Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology
    • San Bernardino County Museum
    • San Diego Natural History Museum
    • Sky’s the Limit (Twentynine Palms, CA)
  2. To receive the extra credit points, students must submit the following:
    1. A three-page report (may include up to 2 pictures, each approx. 4X5 inches, relevant to the theme you are writing about), and
    2. A picture of the student posing in front of the Museum or Observatory Entrance as evidence of your visit. This picture (approx. 4X5 inches) should appear on the cover page of your report below the report’s title. Thus, your report will have three pages of text plus a cover page (with your picture and title of your report on it).

Your report can have any format; you could write it as if you were a journalist reporting the geologic collection in the museum; or you could stress on, say one, two, or three favorite exhibits that attracted your attention. There are various exhibits in each museum; your report must be on any geology theme/s (including astronomy) displayed in the museum.

Make sure that your report must be personalized to your experience in the museum and should discuss its contents to topics covered in the course.

Reports written entirely on, for example, biology (plants, animals) or other themes unrelated to geology will not receive any credit at all. In addition, a report that just lists and defines or describes items or exhibits in the museum or observatory without relating them to the course will receive substandard grade.

Here are some topics (just examples) that may be interesting if you visit the Natural History Museum of LA County: the “Gold Rush History”; “Gemstones”; “Precious Minerals” such as gold, silver etc; “Fossils”; “Rocks”, “Meteorites”, etc.

Here are some topics (just examples) that may be interesting if you visit the Page Museum (La Brea Tar Pits): “The working conditions of Excavating for Fossils”, “Fossil Types Found in the Tar Pits”, “Interpretation of Los Angeles’ Climate 10,000-40,000 years ago”, “Tar Pits – How They are Formed, their Chemistry, and Age” etc.

Your report must be typed with Times New Roman font, 12 points, double spacing.
