ewrt 1a weekly discussion 6 one original post and five reflection on others posts

One original post

Please create an original post that is ONE solid paragraph, with a clear topic sentence, at least three body sentences, and one or two concluding sentences. Remember that we are practicing paragraph structure as much as we can in this class! Also be sure to look at your own writing for any comma errors. Your weekly discussion grade will now include weight on comma usage, in addition to paragraph structure.

The prompt for the paragraph is: Tell us about the first book you selected and tell us (1) why did you select this book; (2) how is the reading going so far ; and (3) what do you think of the book? Conclude with some general observation about what you expect from this book.

To earn full points, you must reply to four other students, writing at least three-sentence replies (your replies don’t need to be complete paragraphs). Also be sure to proofread your work for typos, grammar, and spelling.

I will upload the book below.

If you have any question, please feel free to ask me.

Here are two examples:

1. The second book that I chose for the final presentation was Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. I chose this book because it was verbally recommended by Alex during the first day of class. I have already finished reading this book, and I cannot agree more with Alex’s glowing recommendation! This book discussed the ramifications of Will’s brother’s death and the rules that he must follow to avenge his brother. Every page in Reynolds’s book is formatted differently, with sporadic spacing, misaligned sentences, yet the general flow of the novel is still coherent, almost poetic in nature. I think this book beautifully portrayed in the inner workings of Will’s mind, allowing us the reader to delve into his psyche. It allows us to discover what drives his Id, what stops his Ego, and what enables his Superego. His confrontations with various people he hallucinates in his mind show us the internal struggle he has with following the rules that he knows he must follow. I definitely recommend that everyone should read this book because of the unique writing style and formatting of each page, as well as the beautifully written internalizations of the main character.

2. The online reviews guided me to select Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert as my second book for this class. I just started reading it. I was afraid that it will be another ‘influential’ book telling people how to find happiness waking up at 5 am every day, exercising, and disciplining our minds. The book appears to be focusing on our fear, the feeling which limits and makes life boring. I agree with the author, fear is monotonous and uninteresting. Life without limitation and worrying is more exciting, moreover, courage might lead to unforgettable memories and occasions. I like the beginning of this creation but I can not recommend it before I’m done reading it. Books about happiness and finding meaning became lately very popular. Unfortunately, only some of them have the hidden treasure inside. In my opinion, most of modern famous books make readers more depressed. We read the rules in the book and try to change ourselves to become “successful”. But what does it mean successful? Most of the time books focus on money and position but is that really the meaning of life? Furthermore, they create endless blame. We focus too much on the principles instead of acceptance. It’s important to improve and grow but start with accepting yourself and stop blaming yourself for not being perfect. More than half of the book is still waiting for me to find out if this book also has a hidden gem.

Five Reflection On Others Posts:

Write one paragraph for each reflection, there are five reflection in total

writing requirment

1. Each post MUST BE three or more sentences. This includes your posts in response to other student posts.

2. Each post must be detailed. It is not enough to simply write, “I agree with you” or “I like your idea.” You must say WHY you agree or like someone’s ideas.

3. Write in complete, standard English sentences. Do not “text.” Poorly written posts will not be considered for a grade.

4. If you disagree with someone’s post, politely do so. Explain why you disagree with facts and details.

5. If you agree with someone, build on the ideas.

6. You can reply to someone who had replied to your original post; this will count as another of your required postings for the assignment.

7. Be kind, respectful, and curious toward other students.

8. The instructor reserves the right to delete any post that is offensive, intolerant, or not sufficiently academic for a college-level course.

Please reapply these four reflection:

“Hi Kevin,

Thanks for sharing the reflection on Long Way Down. I found that this book is really interesting only through words since you mentioned that the author has a unique writing style- sporadic spacing and misaligned sentences. However, readers can still understand his words without any confusion. I am impressed by the author’s talent and writing skills. Besides, I also like the part in which you say that the book beautifully portrayed the inner mind of Will so that readers can know about this character better and deeper. It is always great to try to read different types of writing because you never know how wonderful it is after you read it. Lastly, I am happy that you enjoy reading this book as well, and you also learn a lot from Long Way Down.”

“Hi Jagoda,

It’s great to hear that you’re liking this book so far. I can understand that sometimes it can be hard finding value in books that try to dictate how we should deal with happiness, fear and or doubt. But I believe that life is composed of all three things and it’s necessity is pertinent to living a well-balanced and meaningful life. Having no fears or doubts will ruin life’s ability to throw new challenges at us because it’s what keeps us interested. but I’m glad this work is trying to steer away from this common tactic. I hope you enjoy reading this book further. “

3. Yu Tsen Lin;

“The second book that I decided to read for the final presentation is Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do. Thanks to classmates’ sharings, I have a further understanding of some books they chose, and I also search every book on the Internet to figure out which book I should read next. Among many great books, The Best We Could Do caught my attention the most because this is a graphic memoir, a genre of book that I always want to try reading it. From my perspective, I think the author is intelligent as she utilizes vivid illustrations with concise words to express her thoughts, emotions, and situations more concretely. Making readers comprehend the story better, and sparking readers’ interest to finish reading the book, I am no exception. The reason why Thi writes this book is that she wants to be more emotionally close to her parents. Thus, she begins digging deeper into her family history and asks her parents about their previous lives in Vietnam. Through her parents’ words, she remembers that there’s a difficult time when her parents take them to flee from Vietnam to the United States. In order to provide Bui and her siblings a better life, they came to America as refugees in the 1970s. As reading this plot along with the realistic images, I burst into tears. Their life of being an immigrant is not easy, especially people regard them as refugees, yet Bui’s parents still determine to come to the States for giving their children a stable life and a bright future. Thus, I am touched by her parents; meanwhile, I once again realize my parents have also done a lot for me, and I should always be grateful to them. Bui’s life as a refugee is not a unique one, but the way she writes her own story is honest and stunning. Resonated with today’s global refugee crisis, I think people should consider what we could to do for this issue, and help them as much as we can.”

example of the reapply:

“Hi Lin

Thank you for sharing your reflection on The Best We Could Do. This is the book I chose for my pervious reading. I also enjoyed reading this book because of the content inside, it contain lots of graphic and little words or sentences, which makes the messages in the book to be easier to understand and create emotion connection while reading with graphics and texts. I agree with you that we should care more about refugee issues but this problem mostly related to government power and politics, and the government will only make policies that benefit that country, so it is difficult to improve the problem in short time, but as an individual, we can donate money to organizations that are helping refugee. “

4. Michelle Koesmono:

“For the fiction section, I chose to read The Book of Unknown Americans, by Cristina Henriquez. I selected this book because it was recommended to me by a friend. It’s been a hectic week for me so I’ve only started reading the first few bits of it, but I am already hooked. What fascinated me was that the author didn’t write in chapters, she wrote through the different characters’ point of views. This style contributed to the depth of the author’s writing, conveying equal voice to the narrative. From the name of the characters, they are recognized as Mexicans. The book portrays the journey of a Mexican family moving across the border to start a new life. As its title emphasizes, the book reveals the family’s individual accounts on living as ‘Unknown Americans’. As far as page sixty-one, the book hasn’t disappointed me yet. I look forward to finishing it. “

example of the reapply:

“Hi Michelle,

I also chose this book for my first reading assignment. The way how the author wrote through the different characters’ point of view also fascinated me. Told through different voices and perspectives, this book examines the encounters of Hispanic immigrants to the US. I could see and feel their challenges of being immigrants and their hesitations as they found out about the new culture from the US. I hope you learn something from this book. Thank you for sharing!”

5. Jacquelyn Natasha:

“I chose to read The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui as my second book assignment. I am not the type to read books, but graphic memoir interested me. By looking at the images, I can get a sense of what is happening, especially as people who turned off books. The Best We Could Do is a timely story about families and outcasts in America. It investigates movement and all the emotions and issues encompassing this circumstance, and the impacts it has on people who are displaced. I have read through four chapters so far and cannot wait to finish the book. I love how the creator used a personal story to exhibit the distinction that shaped her family. Although individual experiences, it addresses various and relatable universal struggles, own failings, and the significance of identity. I hope this book inspires empathy between ages and invites us to listen deeply to each other’s stories.”
