These days, the national rates of violent crime are actually falling; the rates of truly scary crime seem to be increasing. In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” Flannery O’Connor presents a character who was very familiar to people of the 1950s: the mad-dog spree killer. The Misfit is reminiscent of infamous criminals of that era: Charlie Starkweather and the In Cold Blood pair, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith.

We are right to fear people like these. However, does our hugely increased access to national news (through cable TV and the Internet, specifically social media) emphasize our sense of “truly scary crime” and minimize our awareness of the generally falling rates of violent crime? Discuss this idea. Must be in your own words
