Senior functional officers of Chattanooga Ice Cream (marketing, manufacturing, research & development, control, and human resources) clash over alternative ideas for turning around a business in decline. The general manager is faced not only with choosing between competing ideas, but also managing conflict and determining whether his consensus-oriented style is appropriate to the needs of the situation.
You should assume that you are a consultant hired to advise Charles Moore on the issues in the case. Using the information in your reading of the chapters to date, you should carefully craft an argument for the actions that you believe they should undertake to address these issues. Charles is an established leader and he recognizes that you are also an expert in this field. You must consult Charles on what to do. You should evaluate the decision making process and environments that affect his organization. You’ll also want to consider the Chattanooga culture and the way Chattanooga’s culture has responded to this incident. Lastly, you’ll want to consider what changes Chattanooga should make and how Charles should approach the upcoming decision.
